Lombardy

The cultivation of grape vines in Lombardy dates back to VII-V century BC by Atestini, Etruscans and Ligurians, even if there is archaeological evidence to testify the presence of vines as early as prehistoric times. The climate of the region is very diverse, generally it boasts a continental climate thanks to the presence of the Great Lakes, but also in the mountainous areas and alpine valleys of Valtellina, where there is a good exposure to the sun with the absence of fog, this affords a milder climate than in the plains. Among the most important red grapes produced here, there is nebbiolo in Valtellina, barbera, bonarda, croatina, merlot and cabernet;pinot noir is produced in Oltrepò Pavese and in Franciacorta that together with the chardonnaygrape contribute to the production of sparkling wines. Apart from chardonnay, other white grapes produced are the tocai friulano, pinot blanc, riesling and various trebbiano.
